The surgical roots of ophthalmology influenced the initial evolution and general perception of the field. As a natural result of it surgical history, surgical ophthalmology has been strongly supported by a number of well-know societies. Although new treatment approaches are revolutionising the field, the attitudes of the established societies have remained predominantly surgically focused and, at present, no society specifically supports clinical ophthalmology and its emphasis on pharmacological interventions.
With dynamic changes in the clinical sector and increasing awareness of the role of pharmacological interventions, The Society for Clinical Ophthalmology now offers the key opinion leaders in clinical ophthalmology a forum and a voice to harness the momentum in the field and to use it to establish existing and future interventions as ethical and efficacious approaches to treatment.
Launched in 2007, the Society for Clinical Ophthalmology aims to:
- Advance the use of non-surgical ophthalmology
- Establish a forum to encourage discussions concerning ophthalmology and the development of
non-surgical approaches to treatments - Review and develop international collaboration on non-surgical ophthalmology
- Promote the publication of non-surgical ophthalmic research and review and publish guidelines on the use of non-surgical approaches and procedures in ophthalmology
